The Miniaturist
by Jessie Burton, read by Davina Porter
When 18 year old Nella moves in with her new merchant husband and his sister and two servants, she is given little more from him than a miniature replica of their home. Nella begin receiving items for the miniature house from a miniaturist, along with some unsolicited miniatures.
I had heard a lot of hype surrounding this novel, and I was a bit disappointed with it. I did not connect with Nella at all. She claimed to be so observant and aware of the people around her, but she missed so many obvious things because she just wasn’t paying any attention at all. I wish more of the other characters’ lives were explored. I wish the miniaturist were explained at all. It felt so unfulfilling to learn about her without actually learning anything about her and that just made her more of a creeper than a mystery. I wanted to like this, but it just wasn’t for me.
