TBR Jar

At some point last year I decided I wasn’t going to get any new books until I read all the ones I already owned. That didn’t happen, and now I have a lot more books on my shelves that I need to read.

In another attempt to get through all my unread books, I’ve decided to make a TBR jar. I’m not entirely sure where this idea originated, (somewhere on YouTube, I think?) but I’m hoping it will help me by taking away the need to decide which book I should pick up next. I’m also hoping it will force me to stop avoiding certain books on my shelves that I just never seem to be in the mood for when left to my own devices.

I wrote the titles of all the unread books I have on my shelves on a piece of green colored paper. Then, I cut the paper so each book had an individual slip, folded them all up, and looked through all my cabinets for any of the empty jars I used to have, but then I realized I recycled them all because they were just taking up room in my cabinets instead of actually being used. Typical, right?

Luckily, this little glass from Yazoo fit all my pieces of paper inside. Now, it lives on my bookshelves. Whenever I’m done reading a book and I don’t know what I want to read next, I can just pick a paper and the decision is made for me.

I’m not really sure if this is how TBR jars were intended to be used. I know some people only put a certain genre in or only the books they’ve had on their shelves for a while. Some people pull one or two to add to their monthly TBR. I’m going all in with my entire list of unread books that I own so I can use this whenever I don’t already know exactly what I want to read.

If you have a TBR jar, how do you use yours?
