Pterodactyl Costume

No one’s really excited for Halloween after last year. But, we’ve decided to make the best of it and do something fun and silly.

I decided I wanted to be a dinosaur for Halloween. More specifically, I wanted to be a Pterodactyl. I’m going to be at work most of the day, so it needed to be something I could easily function in. Also, the location I’ll be at won’t be open, so I didn’t want to invest a lot of time or money into it. So, of course, I diy-ed it.

I used a foam sheet to make the shapes of the head, mouth, and eyes. Then I used a glue gun down the middle of the head and folded it over to make it hold its 3-dimensional shape. I attached the eyes to the head, then the head and mouth to a folded bandana so I could wear the whole thing like a headband. I painted the eyes and mouth with acrylics.

For the wings, none of the edges are hemmed, some of the stitching is exposed in a non-decorative way. It’s definitely not the best thing I’ve ever sewed, and I could have made it a lot nicer, but it’s not the worst, and it serves its purpose of giving me wings for one day. I got a bit of flannel in a the same color as the head, cut it into a triangle, folded the long edge of the triangle enough the I could stitch sleeves, then cut the front out so I could wear it like a cardigan. This gives the appearance of wings and the middle of the back ends in a point like a tail.

What are you going to be for Halloween?
