Jack of All Trades, Master of None

I’ve accumulated a strange array of skills over the years. And I just keep adding to the collection. People who don’t know me well are surprised that I know how to do a lot of the things I know how to do. And no one who knows me is ever surprised or discouraging when I decide I want to try something else.

Growing up, we always had some sort of extracurricular activity, but we were never forced to continue with something when we stopped enjoying it. So, while we missed the chance at becoming violin prodigies or olympic level athletes, we got to try new things as our interests changed. And I’ve continued to operate that way, hanging on to the things I like doing, but never shying away from trying something else, or setting something down when I’m not enjoying it anymore.

I spent a lot of this year trying to curate my skills, deciding which ones I wanted to devote the most time to. The things I actually cared about getting better at, rather than the constant dabbling I tend to do. I managed to get that list rather small, and I’m pretty proud of the progress I’ve made on those skills, although I still have learning to do. But I enjoy that. And I like having the time to continue to dabble in all of my other skills when the mood strikes, or try something new when anything else catches my eye.

Here’s to trying something new.

  1. Hey, I collect hobbies too! My most recent venture is into drawing, and I suck at it, but I enjoy it so much. I can totally relate to you, fellow multi-potentialite. Here’s to always being open to new experiences 🙂
