Writing seems like such a solitary activity, as does reading. It’s just you and the words on the page. Except it’s a lot more than that. In its simplest form, the writer is sharing a story with the reader. So, at a minimum, there are two people involved, sharing something between them. In a more common form, there are a lot more people involved in getting the story from the writer to the reader and the feedback of the reader all the way back to the writer.

The community of writers sharing tips and tricks and words of encouragement. The community of agents and artists and editors and publishers working to perfect and put out the writers’ words. The community of readers enjoying and engaging with those words. It’s a whole wordy world of people creating, consuming, and discussing stories. Communities that I love being a part of.

I’m approaching the part of my writing where I need other people to help me. It’s an intimidating part of the process, but an important one. I need their feedback, the good and the bad, to make my story the best it can be. And while it’s a vulnerable thing to share an unfinished novel, as someone who has made a long journey from writing for private catharsis to writing with an intention to share, it’s so fulfilling to be able to show the world I’ve created and the characters I’ve lived with for years with people who are as excited about my story as I am.

I still have a long writing road ahead of me, but I’m glad to have so many supportive people cheering me on as they eagerly await a copy of my currently unfinished book.
