Bounty by Kurtis Wiebe and Mindy Lee

Bounty
by Kurtis Wiebe and Mindy Lee

The Gadflies go from wanted criminals to bounty hunters as they try to outrun their pasts.

This story checked a lot of boxes for things I typically like in my sci-fi, but something about it missed the mark for me. There’s crime and spaceships and explosions, a tight knit crew with highly questionable pasts, bounty hunting and secrets that come out along the way. There’s a lot of action with just enough nonsense and lightheartedness sprinkled throughout to balance everything out. It has a lot of cool sci-fi elements that I enjoyed, but I just didn’t connect with the characters or the story.

The story is a bit chaotic and told not entirely in order. It was difficult to consistently follow what was happening, which I don’t usually have a problem with. I had all the pieces, but I didn’t quite get how they all fit together. Most of the story focused on one of the sisters in the crew, so we get to know her a bit, but little is revealed about the majority of the other characters. Overall, this is certainly not a bad story if you’re looking for a quick, quirky sci-fi fix. It has a lot of great elements, but it just wasn’t for me.
