Peter Panzerfaust, Volume 1
by Kurtis Wiebe and Tyler Jenkins
Now an old man, ‘Tootles’ recalls meeting Peter, an American boy, who led a group of French orphans against the Germans. A retelling of Peter Pan, set in France during World War 2.
An interesting take on the familiar tale of Peter Pan as he leads the Lost Boys and the Darling children through Neverland and face Captain Hook. Except without the real magic of flying and never growing old, the group is trying to survive one day at a time in a war-torn France.
I found the character design to be kind of confusing as most of the characters look very similar, but the story was compelling. There were a lot of references to the original story, adapted to fit the new setting and time period. It was interesting to see Peter Pan being a reckless young leader in a whole new setting. I’m generally a fan of retellings of fairytales and familiar children’s stories, and this graphic novel retelling is no exception.
