We’re halfway through the year already, so it’s time to take a look at what I’ve read so far. At this point, I’ve read 39 books and DNFed a handful of others. The vast majority of that has been fantasy with a few other genres sprinkled in. Audio books are really carrying the team here, but I’m inching my way through my physical TBR too. Let’s get into the mid-year freak out tag.
best book you’ve read so far?
Red Sister by Mark Lawrence is easily my favorite read of the year so far and I’m eager to read the rest of the series
best sequel you’ve read so far?
Although I read the entirety of The Memoirs of Lady Trent and The Wheel of Time series this year, I think I have to give this one to Heart of Betrayal by Mary E. Pearson. It’s not a new favorite for me, but I liked it more than the first book in the series and now I’m much more interested in seeing how this series concludes
new releases you want to read?
There are so many. I’m finally looking away from my shelves and seeing all the new books out there. I think the three new releases I’m most eager to get to are Kagen the Damned by Jonathan Maberry, Juniper & Thorn by Ava Reid, and The Bone Orchard by Sara A. Mueller
most anticipated to still be released in 2022?
At the moment I’m very interested in The Book of Gothel by Mary McMyne
biggest disappointment?
Probably She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan. I didn’t like the main character for the majority of the book and it was much more historical leaning than fantasy. I was excited to read this one, but it did not live up to my expectations
biggest surprise?
Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones. Having seen the movie ages ago I was surprised how many differences there were in the book from what I remember of the movie. Much more interesting and magical than I had expected
new favorite author?
Allie Brosh quickly won me over with her humor and reflections in Solutions and Other Problems
new fictional crush?
Perhaps this is ill-advised with the immense amount of trouble he manages to get himself into and out of, but Matrim Cauthon of The Wheel of Time. He’s reluctantly loyal, fortunately lucky, and clever enough to make it through all the situations he finds himself in. Easily one of my favorites from the series
new favorite character?
Ropa from T.L. Huchu’s The Library of the Dead. A snarky teenager taking care of business, Ropa looks after her family, talks to the dead with her mbira, and boldly takes on a dangerous mystery
a book that made you cry?
Falling Leaves by Adeline Yen Mah
a book that made you happy?
Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir
most beautiful book you’ve bought read?

Spear by Nicola Griffith has such stunning artwork
what do you want to read before 2022 ends?
Everything, haha. With the end of my owned TBR in sight, I’ve started adding a lot of things to my general TBR. I’m trying to keep it reasonable, but I don’t think this list is getting smaller any time soon
