This weeks prompt for Top Five Tuesday is actually Favorite Book Quotes, but since I don’t tend to remember specific lines from books, at least not off the top of my head, I decided to make my own spin on it. I’ve recently been re-watching the show Firefly, a sci-fi show with a ship and a crew that I love revisiting. Plus, the show and movie have a number of books and graphic novels adding to the world and the characters, so it’s not too far off.
This space western has a lot of moments and lines that I love, but I picked out five of my favorites that I think give a good show of how devoted the crew are to one another and the humor they apply to their more dangerous endeavors.

Mal: You turn on any of my crew, you turn on me.
In one of Captain Mal’s more intense interactions, he takes a betrayal within his crew very personally. One of the many shows of how devoted he is to protecting his crew, whoever that may be.
Jayne: How’s it sit? Pretty cunning, don’t you think?
Wash: A man walks down the street in that hat, people know he’s not afraid of anything.
Jayne doesn’t seem to love anything more than money and his guns, until his mother sends him a letter and a hand knit hat. It’s so sweet.
Tracey: When you can’t run, you crawl. And when you can’t crawl, when you can’t do that
Zoe: you find someone to carry you.
An old saying within the show, when one of Mal and Zoe’s war buddies turns up needing some help they’re both willing to carry him to where he needs to go.
River: “Day” is a vestigial mode of time measurement based on solar cycles. It’s not applicable. I didn’t get you anything.
On her brother Simon’s birthday, River has a perfectly good explanation for her lack of gift.
River: Permission to come aboard?
Mal: You know, you ain’t quite right.
River: That’s the popular theory.
Mal: Go on, get in there. Give your brother a thrashin’ for messin’ up your plan.
River: He takes so much looking after.
When a bounty hunter catches up to Serenity looking for River, she finally gets her chance at orchestrating a plan with Mal following her lead. It’s a great display of both their sarcasm and cooperation
