The Alchemist
by Paulo Coelho
An Andalusian shepherd dreams of finding a treasure in Egypt and embarks on a journey to find it.
I’ve heard such lovely things about this story in the past and how meaningful it is, and, I’m pleased to say, it was as endearing as I was told. Santiago begins his story as a simple shepherd, enjoying the travel that comes with leading a flock of sheep. He’s pleased with his life, but them he has a dream that he is not content accepting as just a dream, it’s a goal, his own personal legend.
Santiago sets out on a journey to find the treasure of his dreams, giving up his flock to do so. He must do different work to afford the trip and meets a number of characters who leave a lasting impression upon him on the way. He learns lessons and sees many things new to him on his personal pilgrimage that leads him somewhere unexpected. Beautifully written to portray a clear message, Santiago’s perseverance in satisfying his dream, even when there is doubt, displays the importance of listening to your dreams and recognizing the signs that will lead you to your own personal legend.
I definitely recommend this short, thoughtful book.
