The Best Christmas Pageant Ever
The Herdmans, book 1
by Barbara Robinson
A family of the six worst children in the world decide to take part in the Christmas pageant.
A fun, cute read has our narrator’s mother taking over as the lead of the Christmas pageant. The predictable event becomes much less predictable when the Herdman children hear about the play and decide they want the lead roles. The Herdmans don’t even know the story of Christmas, but the other children are too afraid to challenge them. They learn about Christmas, bringing fresh perspectives to the tale, as they prepare for the pageant.
I had a lot of fun reading this story. The Herdmans are absolutely wild children. The things they do and their relationships with everyone else in town are so stressful. But at their core they’re more than meets the eye. As we see the children prepare for the pageant we learn about each of the six Hermans, and a few of the others, as we hope they can make it through the short pageant without beating anyone up or burning anything down.
A great Christmas read that is fun for any age.
